INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATIONS
Introductory notes
Classifications present the system of expressions in standard form, used for presenting certain phenomena. They separate general data into categories that are, whenever it is possible, homogeneous in the sense of those characteristics that are the subject of a certain survey. Such categories are the most frequently shown in hierarchical structure, each being given a specific letter or numeric mark.

Classifications are divided into referent and derived.

Referent classifications are those that are globally accepted and officially adopted by the United Nations or similar international institutions (IMF, UNESCO, ILO). Examples of such classifications are ISIC (Classification of Activities), CPC (Classification of Products), HS (Foreign Trade Classification), ISCO (Classification of Occupations), etc.

Derived classifications are based on and derived from the referent ones, such as NACE (Classification of Activities in EU), CPA (Classification of Products in EU), ISCO-88 (Classification of Occupations in EU), etc.
On the basis of referent and derived classifications, national classifications are established, being completely or to a certain level harmonized with the basic ones.
